Are you on the road to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor and need supervision hours? If so, consider the Center for Intention and Focus.
What was your dream when you pursued a career in counseling?
The calling came. You were always the person your friends would want to talk to about their challenges.
You decided to return to school to turn that gift into a vocation. It may have been in a flash or building over time, but you have a vision.
You are starting your second career, and you gave up years of income and took on debt to finally enter this new venture. Regardless of where you started, you have spent years, money, and time to get to this moment finally. Why did you do this? Understanding others, yourself, and your own way makes this world a better place.
Now it’s time to cross the final obstacle – becoming fully licensed.
I know the road can be bumpy.
My therapy career was almost cut short. I was working in an inpatient adolescent unit and accruing many clinical hours, but I hated the work.
My experience was so far removed from the dream that I made concrete plans to leave the profession. Perhaps you are working a less-than-satisfying first job as I did initially. I would be glad to discuss and help you choose the right path.
On the other end of the spectrum, you may be struggling to get enough hours and unsure how to get those direct hours you need, especially as you attempt to make ends meet through other work.
Regardless of your situation, I would be glad to walk alongside you to help you map out where you want to go and how you want to get there.
Working with a colleague in private practice changed everything.
I regained the joy and the perspective that drew me to the field and reconnected to that dream. For me, the change that made all the difference was working in private practice. I started working with motivated clients and finally used my skills and gifts.
Now that I’m established and “living out the dream,” I love it. It is a privilege to walk alongside my clients, help them grow, and discover lives of greater meaning and vitality.
It’s important to do your supervised work in a place that matters
I would be honored to collaborate with you…
… as you move toward making your dream a reality. As you see below, learning is one of my core values.
I find it stimulating and life-giving to work with other professionals to help you become the clinician you desire. I enjoy creating a space where learning and exploration are welcomed. This helps to facilitate growth for us both.
I would be especially glad to help you develop my specialties: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Neurofeedback, and ADHD coaching. I also have an extensive background working in integrated Primary Care and Behavioral Health.
Please reference my CV to review some of my experiences.
These are my core values…
Truth-seeking: Remaining curious about root causes is essential for understanding the world more accurately.
Integrity: Ensuring our words match our actions and doing the right thing is fundamental to establishing trusting relationships.
Acceptance – Be willing to start here, at this moment, as a powerful move.
Science (particularly neuroscience) – Neuroscience and physiology provide a richer, more contextually appropriate understanding of psychology. Science is best approached with humility, curiosity, and a touch of wonder.
Mindfulness – Maintaining the practice of being present in this moment and engaging fully in our work, learning, and lives.
Learning/Growth – A high-performing therapist must embrace learning and growth. Whether pursuing expert status or exploring different approaches, growth is the lifeblood of a thriving and satisfying practice.
Loyalty/Fidelity – First, we will develop a relationship where we have each other’s back. Second, we will help you map out how to create a practice you want for the long haul.
Service – Our primary job is to serve and develop our clients. It is also the job of the Center for Intention and Focuses to serve and develop you as a therapist.
Here’s what we’ll do…
We’ll clarify your ideal client…
Through exercises and focused discussion, we will work on finding the best clients you can serve. I have learned that having a clear vision of who you want to serve, utilizing the right tools, and establishing your skills and philosophy of change allows for excellent work and satisfaction.
We’ll clarify and discuss your personality…
I will invite you to take the personality assessment of the NEO-PI. The Five-Factor Model (FFM) is the gold standard of personality assessments, and much of the personality research has coalesced around the FFM.
The interesting thing about personality is that it is enduring and does not change much over time (especially once you reach 25 – barring traumatic brain injury). My experience with FFM helped me understand the “ruts” I am likely to go into and clarified some points of conflict between my personality and my life goals. Personality is not destiny. However, through this increased insight, I am mindful of my tendencies, allowing me to keep moving forward more effectively toward my goals.
We’ll identify your practice strengths…
It is important to be a reflective practitioner; by that, I mean taking time to notice the sessions where the time flew by. What were you doing? Did that session feel like the client and you were dancing or wrestling? Clarifying the populations that bring you vitality is often a sign of a good match. Then, we can find the tools and resources to connect your strengths with existing needs for a productive and satisfying result.
You’ll have the opportunity to do ACT case conceptualization…
Together, you will have the chance to conceptualize your cases using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I have found it very helpful to conceptualize treatment using the Hexaflex Transdiagnostic model from ACT. I have several different tools to offer.
If you’re a follower of Jesus…
You’ll learn to integrate your Christian faith into counseling practices. You will learn how ACT is particularly amenable to this integration and some Christian Mindfulness practices (Centering Prayer).
Let’s take you to the next step of your professional journey.
If you’re looking for a supportive, collaborative relationship in a growth-minded culture committed to ongoing learning, you’ve come to the right place!
I can work with you here at the Center or be hired to supervise you in a different setting.
