About Therapy

1407403529It is time to get clear.

The road is long and confusing if you don’t have a map.

Now is the time to awaken to the possibilities and potentials in your life.

Whether you can’t quite get organized, put all the pieces together, pay attention well enough, are dealing with overwhelming stress and worry, or have a floundering relationship – you have found the right place.

Anxiety, stress, attention, and relationship problems are rampant in our modern world – a world that is creating new technologies faster than we can fix the problems of those technologies. And it is not your fault, but it is up to you to respond.

This is where I come in.

I would be glad to help you clarify your life and focus on the details that matter. The process includes using personality assessments to help you better understand “who you are” and the gifts and drawbacks to your personality. The process can go further by using QEEG and brain mapping, which will look “under the hood” to see how your brain is firing and clarify the most promising path forward.

In the end, our goal is to create a you that is more centered and resilient. You can become the type who creates room for difficult thoughts and feelings. Ultimately, you will identify what matters most and take effective action toward your chosen values.

The journey is not easy, but worth it.

You’ve spun your tires long enough. Let’s move forward together.

Whether you are dealing with anxiety, ADHD, depression, or a failing relationship – finding the right tools that work for you makes all the difference.

It is time to create the rhythms and habits that allow you to have a life that sees you making genuine progress.

The time for band-aids and half-measures has passed.

It is time to set long-term goals and do the work of moving toward your dreams (with a real plan). It is time to move from reacting to living – make intentional moves in this one precious life.

Our work is about making the changes you want to see in your life.

We’ll look at you and your life.

To understand what you want and how to get there, we have to understand the context of what you’re going through.

We have several tools to measure how your physiology and psychology interact. Some examples include Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG), Heart Rate Variability (HRV), and Continuous Performance Test (CPT). In addition, we offer gold-standard measures of personality and psychological symptoms, as well as diagnostic interviews to assess ADHD, sleep, or trauma. These tools will give awareness and understanding of what has been happening and focus our next steps. The goal is to look together at the important factors affecting your overall quality of life, so we can come up with a clear path forward.

I spent the first year of my training at Denver Seminary, and I value the importance a life of faith has on your worldview.

The combination of these tools allows us to dive deeper into the root causes of your pain. This information is combined with understanding the function of your thoughts, feelings, and memories. We will discuss who and what is most important to you, and together we will plan how to move forward… here, now, today.

One of my core beliefs is that all of “you” is interconnected. There is no separation between the mind and body – it is all one. The same is true for our spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial well-being.

You are the expert on your experience, and I bring guidance about the tools and strategies that give us the best chance to make the changes you desire.

I believe that your strengths and personal gifts, as well as setback and liabilities, all are part of living a rich and meaningful life.

No matter the situation, if you have breath today, there remains the possibility of moving toward a life of meaning, values, and purpose.

Here are some of the strategies that will guide us…

“Homework”

I am a bit of a bibliophile (I love books), so I’ll select books (or parts of books) that will help you integrate what you’ve learned in session into your everyday life.

One of the other frequently used tools is a noticing exercise – what are my ‘toward’ moves and my ‘away’ moves? Let’s slow down and watch the function of your thoughts, feelings, values, and behaviors in life. Aare you moving toward being the person and creating the life you want?

I also monitor progress through an assessment that measures psychological flexibility, which has been predictive of several positive health and mental health outcomes.

Finally, developing a mindfulness practice or doing neurofeedback (if I believe this fits your circumstances) and other methods of optimizing your brain and your life.

I believe that 90% of what you’ll get out of therapy happens outside of our sessions together.

1950003172Mindfulness

I’ve seen how the daily practice of mindfulness has transformed my clients’ lives.

What I mean by mindfulness is the intentional practice of focusing on the present moment in an accepting way and noticing when one’s mind drifts from the present moment and comes back. I approach mindfulness in a western way, but I also use a Christian Mindfulness practice of Centering Prayer for clients who desire this approach.

Some activities we may do together include mindfulness of the breath, guided imagery, and thought-watching to notice the five senses. Mindfulness is very helpful for ADHD, anxiety, stress, insomnia, and sleep problems… it is just beneficial to life! It is hard to progress with your mind if you can never get it settled. Mindfulness is a terrific vehicle to settle a mind and get it to show up to this moment.

We’ll often start with a brief mindfulness activity to give you a taste of mindfulness and make the most of our precious time together.

Values

Values are freely chosen life directions (by you), which will be the hallmark of our work together. Who and what is most important to you?

Your path will unfold before you when you’re clear on your values.

“Experiments”

We might also integrate an experiential exercise between sessions – something to help you change how you relate to your thoughts and feelings, clarify your values, or take committed action.

An example of an experiment is practicing saying no with kindness once daily (to things you can say no to).

Most meaningful learning happens through what we do!

Your experience will be more…

… than a conversation about how to live with fewer symptoms.

Our work is about how to help you thrive based on your chosen values.

Enjoy a life of greater engagement, possibilities, connection to others, and, most importantly, yourself.

I look forward to helping you create a rich, meaningful life.
